Tasouris, Pellicoro Named U.S. Bank Student-Athletes of the Month for September

PORTLAND, Ore. – Men's soccer goalkeeper George Tasouris and women's cross country runner Laura Pellicoro have been named the U.S. Bank Student-Athletes of the Month for the month of September.

Tasouris has been a dominant force between the pipes for the Pilots. Tasouris ranks among the top five in the WCC in almost every statistical category for goalkeepers. So far this year, Tasouris is first in minutes played (906), tied for second in shutouts (four), third in total saves (36) and fourth in save percentage (.800) and goals against average (0.89).

The Cyprus native has earned significant recognition this past month. Tasouris was named the WCC Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 13 after making two key saves against UCLA in a 1-0 win, helping the Pilots defeat the Bruins for the first time ever in the regular season and on the road. Tasouris was also named a candidate for the Senior CLASS Award, the top award recognizing student-athletes that are in their final year of eligibility and have excelled on and off the field.

Pellicoro, meanwhile, has put together a stellar start to the cross country season, finishing as the first runner for the Pilots at two different meets. At the PSU Rust Buster on Sept. 3, Pellicoro took first overall and ran a 13:05.8 in the 4,000-meter to help the Pilots take second as a team. Pellicoro also was the first Pilot to cross the finish line in the 6,000-meter at the Bill Dellinger Invitational on Sept. 23, guiding the Pilots to a fourth-place finish. Portland also beat three ranked opponents in that race: Oregon (24th), Oregon State (23rd) and Boise State (17th).

In no small part due to Pellicoro's performances, the women's cross country team is currently ranked 20th in the nation. So far this season, the Pilots have finished in the top four of every race they've competed in, most recently finishing first at the Charles Bowles Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 2.
