MALIBU, Calif. – The University of Portland's women's tennis team is headed to Malibu, Calif. for a WCC match against the No. 6 Pepperdine Waves. The two teams will face off on Friday, Apr. 16 at 1:30 p.m. Check PortlandPilots.com for live stat and video options.
The Pilots are 2-10 this season and 1-4 in conference play. They are a young squad with six underclassmen on the team. All six underclassmen have appeared in either a singles or doubles match for the Pilots. In their most recent match, the Pilots earned their first conference win 5-2 over the Santa Clara Broncos.
The Waves are 15-3 so far this season and 4-0 in conference play. They are ranked fifth in the nation and were picked to finish first in the conference in the WCC preseason coaches poll. Nine of their 15 wins have come against ranked opponents as well. Most recently, Pepperdine lost to the No. 8 UCLA Bruins 5-2.
Portland has lost to Pepperdine every time the two teams have played since 1998. The Waves have swept the Pilots in all but three meetings during that span. The last time these two teams faced off was on Apr. 6, 2019, a match the Waves won 4-0 in Malibu.
After this, the Pilots will play their final two matches of the regular season at home in the Louisiana-Pacific Tennis Center. They play the Pacific Tigers on Friday, Apr. 23 at 11 a.m. and the Saint Mary's Gaels on Saturday, Apr. 24 at 11 a.m. Live stats and video will be available at PortlandPilots.com.
