Box Score CARY, N.C. – Portland women's tennis standout Iva Zelic pulled out a three-set singles win over No. 75 Mila Saric of Florida State on Tuesday to finish a strong Portland showing at the
ITA All-American Women's Tennis Championships at Cary Tennis Park. Zelic also partnered with teammate Sally Pethybridge to win four-of-five doubles matches at the event.
Zelic, ranked No. 110 in the ITA Preseason Singles Rankings, held on for a 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 victory in the consolation match of the Qualifying Draw to pick up a significant ranked singles win in the fall.
"Iva had one of the biggest wins of her college career in singles today," Portland head coach Filip Zivkovic said. "She had a great turnaround from yesterday, she managed to stay in the moment and play her best tennis when it mattered the most. She has put in a ton of work over the summer and I'm a happy that she got to see it all come to fruition today."
The doubles duo of Zelic and Pethybridge won all three of their Pre-Qualifying Draw contests to earn a spot in the Qualifying Draw. After dropping a close 8-6 decision to a team from Mississippi State on Monday, they bounced back for an 8-4 win over Boise State's Nicole Discenza and Joana Baptista.
Zelic and Pethybridge improve to 6-2 in doubles this fall against top competition.
"This tournament was a great experience for both Iva and Sally," Zivkovic said. "It is very important for our players to see this level of competition and understand what it takes to be consistently successful at the highest level of collegiate tennis. This is a valuable experience that will serve our entire team very well as we continue with the Fall season. I am very proud of the way Iva and Sally competed. We had a great run in doubles and they showed that we can be one of the best doubles team in the country with execution and their buy in when it comes to our system.
"Overall it was a great event and we learned a lot about who we are and what we need to do to improve. I am excited to get back to work with all of our players and continue to get better every day."
The Pilots will next be in action this week at the Husky Invitational in Seattle, Wash.
