PORTLAND, Ore. – University of Portland men's basketball has signed big man Cyprian Hyde (Oceanside, Calif./Vista HS) to a National Letter of Intent, head coach Shantay Legans announced on Thursday.
Hyde (6-10, 220) provides versatility from the post position with his size and athleticism. An elite shot blocker with three-point shooting range, Hyde was named the Vista High School Defensive Player of the Year last season. He finished the season averaging 16.5 points, 11.5 rebounds and 1.6 blocks per game. Hyde has competed with Gamepoint on the club circuit since seventh grade.
"The Portland coaching staff has believed in me since my freshman year," Hyde said of his decision to commit to the Pilots. "Portland is a good school with great academic support. I'm excited to continue my basketball and education at the University of Portland."
"We have had great success in developing big men like Cyprian," Legans noted. "He has everything we look for in a big guy coming out of high school with good size, skills and athleticism. His skill set is already good enough to play at this level, we will just need him to add some bulk to his frame. I have no doubt that he will be a great player for our program."
Hyde joins
previously announced signee Vince Delano as members of the 2023 incoming class.
"Both Vince and Cyprian are not only great basketball fits but will be excellent community members here on The Bluff," Legans noted. "They are serious about academics and a great people that come from wonderful families. They will integrate well in our locker room, on campus and in the community. We continue to build a program with players that the City of Portland will be proud to support."
Portland (2-0) has opened the 2022-23 season with a pair of home wins over Lewis & Clark (89-62) and Florida A&M (91-54). The Pilots will host crosstown rival Portland State on Friday at 7 p.m. Portland was picked fifth in the West Coast Conference Preseason Poll, coming off a 19-win season during Legans' first season on The Bluff.
