Box Score SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Portland women's tennis doubles team of Iva Zelic and Sally Pethybridge had their phenomenal fall season come to an end on Thursday with a loss in the Round of 16 at the
ITA Fall National Championships held at the Barnes Tennis Center.
The Pilot tandem dropped a 6-3, 6-0 decision to the top-seeded and No. 6-ranked pair from conference rival Pepperdine, Janice Tjen and Savannah Broadus.
Zelic and Pethybridge beat Kentucky's Carlota Molina and Elizabeth Stevens 6-4, 7-6 (3) in the Round of 32 on Wednesday and close the fall campaign with a 12-5 record against top competition.
Their entry into the ITA Fall National Championships was a first for Portland women's tennis. The duo qualified for the 32-team doubles draw by reaching the finals of the ITA Northwest Regional Championships in October. They also picked up four wins at the ITA All-American Championships in October.
Portland has wrapped the fall season and will now prepare the dual season which begins at home hosting the UC Davis Aggies on Sunday, January 15 at 10 a.m.
About the ITA Fall National Championships
The ITA Fall National Championships are the grand finale to the fall collegiate tennis season and feature 64 of the nation's top collegiate singles players (32 men and 32 women) and 64 doubles teams (32 men's team and 32 women's teams). The event is in its fifth year, having replaced the ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships beginning in 2017.
