FOLSOM, Calif. – The Portland Pilots competed in their first rowing event of the 2022 spring season, putting together a solid showing. Both of the Pilots' varsity eight boats took second in their respective races, defeating both of their West Coast Conference rivals racing in the event.
Portland's varsity eight boat took second in their race with a time of 7:14.6. That time beat both the Saint Mary's Gaels and the Santa Clara Broncos. Catherine Watson was the stroke for the varsity eight while Sage Iona was the cox.
The second varsity eight also had a strong showing, finishing eight boat lengths ahead of Saint Mary's to claim second with a time of 7:27.3. Sacramento State took the win in this event. Newcomer Dawon Lee was the cox while freshman Sarah Redmond was the stroke.
This season marks the 10
th anniversary of the Pilots officially introducing women's rowing as a varsity sport. It is also the Pilots' second season with head coach Gulliver Scott at the helm and his first full year. The Pilots finished third in the WCC last season and had two rowres – Avery Romana and Brooklin Gomez – named to the All-WCC Team.
