SAN MATEO, Calif. – For the second time in the last three weeks the Portland men's tennis team swept the West Coast Conference weekly awards. Sema Pankin picked up his second WCC Singles Player of the Week honor, while Pankin teamed up with Eleftherios Neos to claim the WCC Doubles Team of the Week award after Portland picked up convincing home wins against Saint Mary's and Pacific.
Pankin,
who won the singles honor on April 5, was dominant in leading the Pilots against the Gaels and Tigers. He dropped just five total games in the two matches as he cruised to victories at No. 1 singles and set the tone for the weekend sweep. Pankin defeated Mathis Moysan of Saint Mary's on Friday by a 6-1, 6-3 margin and then cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 win against Peter Alam of Pacific on Saturday.
Portland's No. 31-ranked tandem of Pankin and Neos won both matches at the top of the doubles lineup. The duo recorded a 6-3 victory to clinch the doubles point against Boris Reckow and James Watt of Saint Mary's on Friday. They then clinched the point again on Saturday with a 7-5 win against Peter Alam and Manroop Saini of Pacific.
The Pilots have clinched a spot in the WCC Tennis Championships which are scheduled for April 28-30 at the Ojai Valley Athletic Club (OVAC) and the Weil Tennis Academy (Weil) in Ojai, Calif. Portland concludes the regular season
against nationally-ranked Gonzaga Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Louisiana Pacific Tennis Center. The Pilots will look to go 8-0 at home with a victory.
