SANTA MONICA, Calif.---The Pilots grinded out a 3-2 win over San Francisco in their second dual match at the WCC Championships on Friday, being topped 4-1 by Santa Clara in two more conference contests held at Ocean Park Beach. Portland 2s Noelani Helm and Taylor Helle claimed three flight sweeps to remain undefeated on the day.
Â
Helm and Helle collected their first win against the Broncos' pair of Elena Radeff and Alexie Epstein with set scores of 21-16 and 21-14. Pilots 4s Annika Stammberger and Keilani Mumolo were just edged by a 2-1 decision that eventually went to Santa Clara to round out match one.
Â
In game two, Helm and Helle beat a Dons duo with a score line of 21-13 and 21-16, and Stammberger and Mumolo registered a three-set victory with set scores of 21-17, 19-21, and 15-9. Portland 5s Talyn Jackson and Lia Hawken recorded the team's third win against USF with marks of 21-9, 10-21 and 15-11.
Â
Helm and Helle later secured another sweep of Radeff and Epstein in a final match against Santa Clara, taking the 2s game 21-15 and 21-16.
Â
"After a record-breaking season for our squad, we wrap up with our highest ever finish in the WCC," said Portland coach Dylan Hamilton. "I am so proud of what our group has been able to do all season, and to come down to Santa Monica and play so well in such tough windy conditions took a ton of heart and toughness."
Â
"It's been a great year, and we can't wait to get back to training in the sand this fall," said Hamilton. "A special thank you to our seniors Kendall and Sarah for helping to push this program in such a great direction. We are better because of them."
Â
The Pilots finish the year with a program best seven wins, and marked the most conference victories in a single season after recording back-to-back WCC sweeps for the first time in school history this past March.
