Monmouth, Ore. -- Redshirt Senior, Justin Hazell continues his strong senior season placing second. Hazell led the Pilot men to a second place finish in the men's 6k out of 8 teams.
The Pilots ran a strong team race, packing up early into the race in an attempt to maintain contact with the leaders. The Pilots' scorers were led by Justin Hazell's second place finish (17:59.5), followed closely by Cohen Williams in fourth (18:03.6) Brady Martisus in eighth (18:11.0), Kevin Andrews in ninth (18:14.4) and Kai Vickers in 15th (18:30.0). The No. 15 ranked Portland men earned a total of 38 points falling just one point short of Simon Fraser's 37 point total.
Head coach, Rob Conner said that the race was "...a battle the whole way, really a fun race to watch and I'm sure compete in." He mentioned that, "Our guys ran smart and finished strong. I am very proud of each of them."
When discussing individual athletes, he said, "Justin ran confidently and was really strong over the last 2k. Cohen was strong the whole way as were Kevin and Brady. Kai had a bounce back race and his training partner AJ was in tow. Special shout out to Evan, sub 5:00-mile pace for the first time for him. A lot of hard work went into that!"
The Pilots' next race will be at the University of Oregon for the Bill Dellinger Invitational on Sept. 23. Visit Portlandpilots.com for more information.
