SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Portland men's basketball had four players earn West Coast Conference All-Academic recognition, the most of any team in the league, the conference office announced on Tuesday. Tyler Robertson and Chika Nduka were named to the 10-player first team, while Jack Perry and Kristian Sjolund were honorable mention.
The four Pilot representatives are the most in program history, while the two first team members matches the most since 2010.
Robertson has a 3.35 grade-point average and is scheduled to graduate this spring as a psychology major. An All-WCC second team selection last season, he has stuffed the stat sheet again this year by averaging 14.9 points, 5.4 rebounds and 5.2 assists per game. He leads the league in assists and free throws made (147), recorded his second triple-double in as many years and joined the 1,000-point club.
Nduka, a sophomore forward, has a 3.63 GPA while majoring in business and was recently named to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Team. The Seattle, Wash. native is averaging 4.2 points and 3.2 rebounds per game while shooting 51.1 percent from the field this season.
Perry utilized a medical redshirt to return for his second year with the Pilots this season. He will earn his post-baccalaureate business certificate this spring and has a 3.20 cumulative GPA. Perry has started 16 of 30 games this season and recorded season-highs of nine points in wins over Villanova and San Francisco.
Sjolund will earn his degree in marketing this spring and has a 3.48 GPA. The Kongsberg, Norway native is averaging 11.5 points and 4.6 rebounds per game. He is one of the most efficient scorers in the nation ranking 35th in true shooting percentage (.648) and 45th in effective field goal percentage (.620) according to KenPom.com and erupted for a career-high 32 points at BYU.
Portland will now focus on the upcoming
2023 University Credit Union West Coast Conference Basketball Tournament. The Pilots will face San Diego in the opening round on Thursday at 6 p.m. with the winner advancing to face No. 5-seeded BYU on Friday at 6 p.m. Both games will be available on ROOT Sports Northwest and BYUtv with radio coverage available at 910 ESPN Portland.
