HOPEWELL, N.J. – Portland Pilots forward Alex Fowler has been named one of five finalists for the 2023 Becky Hammon Mid-Major Player of the Year Award presented by Her Hoop Stats.
The award recognizes the top players in the 26 conferences deemed to be "mid-major", excluding the Power 6 conferences: ACC, Big 12, Big East, Big Ten, Pac-12 and SEC. This is the final announcement until a winner is officially announced in late March.
Fowler was one of the top forwards in the nation this year, averaging a WCC-leading 17.6 points per game. She ranks first in the WCC in points per game and field-goal percentage (58.2%), ranked second free throws made (123), third in total points (509), fourth in steals per game (1.72) and field goals (185) and seventh in assists per game (3.3). She was one of 11 players this year in Division I to average at least 17.5 points, five rebounds, three assists and 1.5 steals per contest.
The Townsville, Australia product earlier this year became the all-time leading Division I scorer for the Pilots, crossing the 2,000-point threshold. She is also the all-time leading rebounder for the Pilots. Among active players, Fowler ranks 16th in career points (2,070) and eighth in field goals made (810).
The Pilots have experienced one of the best regular seasons in program history, going 21-8 overall and 15-3 in conference plays. Their 21 wins are the most they've had in the regular season alone since the 1996-97 season and their 15 WCC wins are the most in program history.
Portland secured the No. 2 seed in the 2023 University Credit Union WCC Tournament and have earned a bye straight to the semifinals. The team will play on Monday, March 6 at 2:30 p.m. against an opponent yet to be determined. Stay tuned to PortlandPilots.com for more information.
