Box Score SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Portland women's tennis team dropped a 4-0 decision to BYU in the first round of the West Coast Conference Championships Thursday at the Aztec Tennis Complex. The Pilots finish the season with a 10-9 overall record, while the Cougars improve to 13-8 and will move on to face Pepperdine in Friday's semifinals.
Portland struggled to find a rhythm from the start as BYU secured the doubles point with wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. UP's No. 1 doubles team of Iva Zelic and Sally Pethybridge were a point away from winning when the match was abandoned.
The Cougars carried the momentum into singles by taking the opening set in all six matches. BYU clinched with straight set wins at the No. 3, No. 4 and No. 6 positions. Zelic and Pethybridge were each leading 4-3 in their respective second sets when the overall match was clinched.
Despite the loss, Portland concluded its best season since the 2015 Pilots went 17-6 and reached the WCC finals. The Pilots
cracked the ITA National Rankings earlier this year for just the third time, knocked off a nationally-ranked opponent, and had the tandem of Zelic and Pethybridge become the first nationally-ranked doubles team in program history.
The future looks bright as the Pilots are expected to return all players from this season's lineup to next year's team.
