LAKE NATOMA, Calif. – Portland Pilots Rowing is back in action this weekend, heading back to Lake Natoma for the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships. The championships are a two-day event running from April 29-30.
The Pilots are coming off a strong showing in their home race at Vancouver Lake, where they took both varsity eight races against the Saint Mary's Gaels and the Seattle U Redhawks. The first varsity eight has earned a win in two straight competitions, having done so in the Husky Open last month.
This is the fourth time that the Pilots have competed at WIRAs and the first time since 2019. The regatta showcases some of the best teams in the west and features three WCC schools this year besides the Pilots: Saint Mary's, Santa Clara and San Diego.
The last time the Pilots were at WIRAs, they had four boats advance to the grand final. They have medaled three times at the championships, with their varsity four earning bronze in 2015, their second varsity eight doing the same in 2014 and the novice four taking gold in 2014.
The first race for the Pilots is Saturday, April 29 at 8:20 a.m. with the first varsity eight. The second varsity eight will race at 9 a.m. and the varsity four will race at 10:30 a.m. Check PortlandPilots.com for livestream options.
