TEMPE, Ariz. – The University of Portland men's tennis team was named an Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-Academic Team on Monday, while five players garnered ITA Scholar Athlete recognition: Oscar Brown, Fabian Gusic, Eleftherios Neos, Issa Yoshida and Nikolas Tvedt.
To qualify for the team award, a program must post a GPA of 3.2 or higher for the academic year. As a team, Portland's active roster posted a 3.27 cumulative GPA during the 2022-23 academic year. Individual scholar athlete awards are given to those with a GPA of 3.5 or higher for the year. Portland was one of 162 Division I teams to be selected, while 959 individuals were recognized nationally.
Four of the five Portland scholar athletes chosen also garnered WCC All-Academic recognition earlier this year as Neos was named to the WCC All-Academic First Team, while Brown, Tvedt and Yoshida earned honorable mention recognition.
Portland (10-9) concluded its best season since the 2015 Pilots went 17-6 and reached the WCC finals. The Pilots cracked the ITA National Rankings earlier this year for just the third time and knocked off a nationally ranked opponent in Northern Arizona. The doubles tandem of Zelic and Pethybridge also became the first UP women's tennis doubles team to be nationally ranked and finished at No. 69 in the yearend rankings. The team is expected to return its entire roster for the 2023-24 season.
Head coach Aaron Gross will return six players from last year's team that finished with a 12-10 overall record. Nicolas Ocana, Nikolas Tvedt, Oscar Brown, Maxim Groysman, Cade Fernando and Fabian Gusic all saw action in the lineup last season and will be joined by four newcomers. Indiana graduate transfer
Luka Vukovic, Tyler Junior College transfer
Nikola Keremedchiev, and incoming freshmen
Stefan Skobelev and
Tannor Binder will join the squad for the 2023-24 season.
