Portland Pilots women's basketball forward Alex Fowler has been nominated for the 2023 NCAA Woman of the Year award. Fowler was nominated by the West Coast Conference along with San Diego volleyball player Gabby Blossom.
The NCAA Woman of the Year program, established in 1991, honors the academic, athletic and community achievements of graduating female college athletes across all three divisions. To be nominated, a student-athlete must have earned a varsity letter in an NCAA-sponsored sport and have earned her undergraduate degree by Summer 2023. Eligible student-athletes are nominated by their institution, with each conference reviewing the nominations and submitting their nominees to the NCAA. The NCAA Woman of the Year selection committee identifies the Top 30 – 10 from each division – before picking three finalists from each Division, with the winner being selected during a luncheon at the NCAA Convention.
Fowler finished her career as one of the best Pilots to ever step foot on The Bluff. She led the Pilots to a 23-9 record this year and a 15-3 record in WCC play, which was Portland's best overall record since the 1996-97 season and the most WCC wins in program history. Fowler led Portland in points (17.8), rebounds (5.6), assists (3.2) and steals (1.8) and became the Pilots' all-time leading scorer at the Division I level with 2,132 career points. She was one of just seven players in Division I to averaged at least 17.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.5 steals this season and the only player nationally to do so while shooting at least 55% from the field.
The Townsville, Australia native is the first Pilot to ever make four All-WCC First Teams and was also a finalist for the Becky Hammon Mid-Major Player of the Year Award presented by Her Hoop Stats. She was named the 2023 WCC Tournament MVP for the second time in her career after leading the Pilots to their second title in four seasons, making her the first Pilot to ever be named MVP of the tournament twice. The Pilots qualified for their first NCAA Tournament since 2020 and played in their first NCAA Tournament game since 1997 this March as well.
