SEATTLE, Wash. -- Portland Pilots Rowing competed at the Tail of the Lake on Sunday, racing in the collegiate two race as well as the collegiate four and collegiate eight races. The varsity eight and varsity four races saw the Pilots take as high as fifth, with 12 boats competing at Lake Union against the Washington Huskies and the Seattle U Redhawks.
The regatta was hosted by Holy Names Academy in Seattle. Each boat partook in a 4,000-meter race on Lake Union, with the event opening entries to college teams this year.
"All of the races went well and the regatta was lots of fun!" Portland captain Kate Feustel said. "It was a competitive environment and every crew we put out was ready to push the limits on what they could do for four thousand meters. It was exciting to against a program like UW and see how we compare. The results are a promising start to our season and make me excited for what is to come!
The racing began with the women's collegiate two race, with Portland having five boats race. The highest finisher was Portland's B boat featuring Julia Kiplinger and Sarah Redmond. They finished the race in 16:56.2.
The collegiate four boats raced next, with four boats representing the Pilots. Behind Washington, Portland's top boat took first, with Leahbelle Paladino as the coxswain and Kate Feustel as the stroke. That boat finished fifth with a time of 15:28.4.
The collegiate eight boats followed, with the Pilots having three boats compete. Once again, the Pilots' top boat took fifth in the competition, posting a time of 14:04.5. Feustel and Paladino were the stroke and coxswain respectively for this top boat as well.
The Pilots will race again on Saturday, Oct. 19 at the Head of the Spokane, an event hosted by the Gonzaga Bulldogs. Check PortlandPilots.com for more information.
