COLFAX, Wash. -- The No. 25 Portland Pilots finished fifth at the NCAA West Regionals, with four runners earning spots in the Top 30. Two Pilots received All-Region honors, with Matt Strangio and Jona Bodirsky finishing in the top 25.
Matt Strangio led the Pilots with a second-place finish, completing the race in 29:08.4. He remained within the top 10 for most of the race and moved up during the final 2k, overtaking four competitors to secure his position. Following Strangio, Jona Bodirsky placed 18th with a time of 29:30.1, a personal record. Bodirsky stayed in the top 30 early on and pushed into the top 20 in the second half.
Bradley Peloquin took 26th place, finishing in 29:36.9 after passing 10 runners during the race. Jonas Gertsen finished 28th in 29:42.5, overtaking 17 runners. Kgadi Monyebodi completed the scoring for the team, placing 31st with a PR of 29:51.5. The Pilots secured their fifth-place finish with 102 points, falling just three points short of California Baptist in fourth.
Runners who finished in the top 25 earned All-Region recognition. Strangio and Bodirsky received the honor with their second and 18th-place finishes, while Peloquin, in 26th, missed the cut-off by 0.7 seconds.
Strangio's finish puts him in position to earn a spot at the NCAA Cross Country Championships next weekend. The official selection show for nationals is tomorrow, Nov. 16 at 2 p.m. The NCAA National Championships are on Nov. 23 at the Thomas Zimmer Championship Course in Verona, Wis.
