GREENSBORO, NC – Portland Pilots Baseball was recognized by the American Baseball Coaches Association with a 2023-24 ABCA Team Academic Excellence Award. The Pilots were one of 470 teams to earn the honor.
To qualify, a high school or college program must have a head coach that is an ABCA member while posting a team GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale or higher. In the fall, Portland baseball posted their highest ever team GPA at 3.59, saw Nick Brink and Carter Gaston make the WCC All-Academic First Team, had five players earn CSC Academic All-District honors in Brink, Gaston, Tanner Douglas, Ben Patacsil and Sam Stuhr and had Brink earn CSC Academic All-American honors.
The Pilots just as strong a year on the field as off. They went 37-19 overall and 19-5 in WCC play. Their 37 wins were the most they've posted in a single season and their 19 wins are the most they've ever had in WCC play and the most across any conference they've played in since 1980. They made the 2024 WCC Tournament Championship this year, advancing to the championship game for the second season in a row.
