Keremedchiev and Skobelev win top flight at Dar Walters Classic

Box Score BOISE, Idaho – Nikola Keremedchiev and Stefan Skobelev won the top flight of the Dar Walters Classic to highlight an impressive debut for the Portland men's tennis team this weekend. Overall, Pilot players finished 13-10 in singles and 8-6 in doubles matches at the event.

The format featured brackets with opponents competing in doubles and then two singles matches to determine the best-of-three winners in each round. Keremedchiev and Skobelev defeated teams from Idaho, BYU and Idaho State to claim the title.

The Portland tandem of Maxim Groysman and Cade Fernando also reached the semifinals of the top flight with wins against Nevada and Idaho.

In the Orange Draw, Pilot freshmen Tom Garcia and Lucas Kimelman got their first taste of Division I college tennis and performed well, while Tannor Binder teamed with an Idaho player and picked up wins in singles and doubles.

"Pretty much across-the-board I'm happy with the effort in Boise this weekend," Portland head coach Aaron Gross said. "It is really nice to win first place in the top flight, but also just the number of matches and experience that we got was valuable. Most of the guys played a ton this summer and so they were ready to go and it showed. Our doubles will continue to improve as we're putting more and more emphasis on that in the fall. Lucas and Tom had a great weekend of experience and got some wins in the process. We have a lot of feedback from this weekend and have a few weeks to put in some hard work and we do it again in the fall regionals mid-October."

The Pilots will next compete at the ITA Northwest Regional Championships hosted in Seattle, Wash. on Oct. 17-22.
