Box Score IRVINE, Calf. – Portland cruised to a 4-0 win against the Temple Owls in a neutral site men's tennis match Sunday at the Racquet Club of Irvine. The Pilots improve to 4-4, while the Owls drop to 4-5 on the season.
Portland took the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions. Nikola Keremedchiev and Stefan Skobelev were 6-3 winners at the top against Martim Marujo and Adam Kresina. Tom Garcia and Lucas Kimelman then clinched with a 6-3 victory over Pranav Nemani and Aayush Bhat. The Pilot No. 2 tandem of Maxim Groysman and Cade Fernando were tied 4-4 when the point was clinched.
Fernando doubled Portland's lead when his opponent at No. 6 singles, Alberto Blumenschein retired after falling behind 6-1, 4-1. Skobelev secured the next point with a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 3 against Maj Najvirt Kolaric and then Keremedchiev provided the overall match clinching point with a 6-4, 6-1 win against Kresina at No. 2 singles.
Groysman was leading 7-5, 4-1 at No. 1, Kimelman was up a set at No. 5 and Garcia dropped his first set, but was leading 3-1 in the second at No. 4 when the match was decided.
"It was very nice to get a win today," Portland head coach Aaron Gross said. "It was a bit of a rock fight in that the winds were gusting pretty good and there was not much clean tennis to be had. Cade, Nikola, and Stefan came through for us, but I was equally proud of Max and Lucas for both saving set points in the first sets of their matches and winning those sets before the match was called. We are just a team in progress and trying to figure out ways to win in different conditions. The best teams we have had in the past have really brought that culture into the fabric of our team. We don't want to waste any time wishing conditions were different, but get right to figuring out solutions. I think it took us a little bit of time today to get to that place mentally, but once we did I feel like we did a good job."
