SAN BRUNO, Calif. – Portland forward Austin Rapp has been named the West Coast Conference Freshman of the Year, the league office announced on Tuesday. Rapp is the first Pilot to win a major conference award since T.J. Campbell was the WCC Newcomer of the Year in 2009. Portland junior Max Mackinnon also garnered All-WCC second team recognition.
Rapp becomes the sixth Pilot to be named WCC Freshman of the Year and first since Ryan Jones in 1999. The others are Dionn Holton (1995), Matt Houle (1990), Erik Spoelstra (1989) and Greg Anthony (1987).
The Melbourne, Australia native also garnered WCC All-Freshman Team honors in what has been a historic season on The Bluff. Rapp currently leads the league in three-pointers made (79), three-point percentage (.354) and defensive rebounds per game (5.9) and is No. 2 in blocked shots (45). He is the WCC leader among freshmen in both scoring (13.7) and rebounding (6.5).
Rapp was named the WCC Freshman of the Week six times, recorded four double-doubles and scored 20 or more points on four occasions during the regular season. He finished strong with a pair of double-doubles last week and has blocked two more shots in seven straight games. Rapp also made at least one three-pointer in 29 of 30 games played.
He is resetting the Portland freshman record book as well, establishing a new record for threes made and is currently No. 2 in single-season blocked shots, just three shy of Tim Frost's record of 48 in 2001. Rapp already is No. 7 in blocks and No. 8 in three-pointers made in a season all-time at UP.
Nationally, Rapp leads all freshmen in three-pointers made, is second in three-point percentage, sixth in free throw percentage, ninth in blocked shots, 15th in rebounding and 21st in scoring.
Mackinnon erupted during league play and finished No. 3 in scoring during WCC games (18.4). The Brisbane, Australia native tied the school single-game scoring record with 43 points in a win versus San Diego on Jan. 23 and has scored in double figures 14 of the last 15 games.
Mackinnon eclipsed 20 points in a game seven times this season. Overall, he averaged 14.4 points, 4.8 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game. His 89.2 free throw percentage is No. 2 in the WCC.
Portland now prepares for the
Credit Union 1 WCC Championship scheduled for March 6-11 in Las Vegas. The Pilots secured the No. 8 seed with an opening round bye and will face No. 9 Pepperdine on Friday at 6 p.m. in the second round. The winner advancing to meet No. 5 Oregon State on Saturday.
