Box Score PORTLAND, Ore. – Sally Pethybridge and Nadine Arbaizar Martinez won three-set singles matches but Portland dropped a 4-2 decision to No. 59 Washington State Saturday at the Louisiana-Pacific Tennis Center.

The Cougars (14-7, 4-2) grabbed the early lead by winning all three doubles match to go up 1-0. Washington State then won at No. 2 and No. 3 singles in straight sets to garner control, but the Pilots (7-9, 2-4 WCC) responded and made it a match.

Pethybridge overcame a first set tiebreak loss and being down a break in the third set to prevail 6-7, 6-2, 7-5 against Eva Alvarez Sande at the top of the order. The final three singles matches all were extended to three sets and went down to the wire.

Arbaizar Martinez outlasted Chisato Kanemaki at No. 5 singles by a 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 margin, but WSU clinched via Hania Abouelsaad beating Isabella Marquart 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 at No. 4 singles. Pilot freshman Maria Galatescu and Martina Markov were in the middle of the third set at No. 6 when the match was abandoned.

Portland will be back in action Sunday in the second match of a doubleheader at Louisiana-Pacific Tennis Center. The Pilot men host Pepperdine at 10 a.m. followed by the women versus Saint Mary's at approximately 2 p.m.
