THIS WEEK IN PILOTS BASEBALL
• The Portland Pilots take on the San Diego Toreros at Fowler Park this weekend for a crucial three-game series.
• The two teams will play between Thursday, April 17 and Saturday, April 19. They'll play on Thursday and Friday at 6 p.m. and 12 p.m. on Saturday.

LAST TIME OUT
• The Pilots are 17-20 after taking their fourth straight WCC series this past weekend, beating the Pepperdine Waves in two out of three games, and winning 14-6 over the CSUN Matadors.
• The Pilots are now 9-3 in WCC play, second in the WCC.
• The Pilots took Friday and Sunday's games 9-4 and 8-7 respectively and dropped Saturday's game 5-2. Sunday's game was a marathon 12-inning game that ended on a walk-off in favor of the Pilots.
• Doyle Kane hit a hard grounder to second base that brought home Cody Nitowitz, giving Portland the win in the 12th. It was their fourth win in extra innings this year and their fourth on a walk-off.
• Jonas Salk shined for Portland, batting .412 with two home runs, two doubles and six RBI's. He becomes the Pilots' leader in home runs for the year with his performance at eight.
• Salk's the only Pilot and only WCC player this year to have multiple home runs in a single game multiple times this year.
• Tyler Howard shined in his three games played as well, improving his on-base streak to 28 games, the longest by a Pilot since Trevor Hahn in 2002.
• The Pilots have won their last seven WCC series dating back to last season.
• Against the Matadors, the Pilots lit up the scoreboard, scoring 14 runs and on 14 hits.
• Five batters had multiple hits on the day, with Jonas Salk and Coleman Hollabaugh racking up three hits each and Cole Katayama-Stall, Zach Toglia and Riley McCarthy each grabbing two. Hollabaugh's three hits are a career-high for a freshman.
•  Katayama-Stall hit a grand slam in the contest. He now sits at five home runs with 24 RBI's, with his RBI total being the most by a Pilot since 2019.
 
THE PERFECT GAME
• On Feb. 25 against the Seattle U Redhawks, Portland lefty Ryan Rembisz threw a perfect game, the first perfect game in program history.
• Rembisz went the full nine innings with no walks, runs or hits allowed, throwing 12 strikeouts in 90 pitches.
• The perfect game is the 37th in NCAA Division I history and just the 21st to happen in a nine-inning game. Prior to that game, Rembisz had never pitched more than 4.1 innings.
• Rembisz is the fourth player in Pilot history to throw a no-hitter, the first since 1958 and the only one to do so in nine innings.
• Rembisz earned WCC Player of the Week honors for his performance as well as NCBWA National Pitcher of the Week and Perfect Game Pitcher of the Week
 
STANDOUT STATISTICS
• Offensively, Brady Bean ranks second in the WCC in total hits at 52, first in at bats (156), sixth in RBI's (31) and fourth in total bases (81).
• Tyler Howard leads the WCC in batting average (.396) and on-base percentage (.504) and strikes out just once every 10.1 at-bats. Howard currently holds a 28-game on-base streak, which is the longest by a Pilot since 2002.
• Howard is also tied for fourth in walks (22) and ninth in hits (44) and OPS (.981).
• Zach Toglia (seven) and Jonas Salk (eight) are sixth and fourth respectively in the conference in home runs.
• Toglia's 27 home runs as a Pilot are fifth all-time as well in program history. He ranks second in the WCC in walks at 23.
• Cole Katayama-Stall's five home runs are the most by a Pilot freshman since 2021 while hits 24 RBI's are the most by a true freshman since 2019
• Cody Nitowitz is fifth in the conference in runs scored at 30 and is first among all WCC batters in total hits against WCC opponents at 20. Nitowitz ranks third in batting average (.435) and runs scored (14) and seventh in OBP (.509) against WCC teams as well.
• Among other offensive leaders, Salk ranks third in WCC play in home runs (four), slugging (.800) and OPS (.1.247) as well as fourth in doubles (five), Bean is fifth in RBI's (14) and Howard is fourth in OBP (.518).
• On the mound, Ryan Rembisz is first in the WCC in innings pitched (50.0), second in the WCC in WHIP (1.18) and tied for first in wins (four), fifth in opponent batting average (.239) and sixth in strikeouts (45). Rembisz is one of just two WCC players to have thrown a complete game this year.
• Curtis Hebert sits among the best in the conference, with him ranking second in ERA (3.27), hits allowed per nine innings (6.55) and opponent batting average (.213) and sixth in strikeouts (43).
• Carter Gaston, Rembisz and Kaden Segel are the only three WCC pitchers to have posted at least 10 strikeouts in a game with no walks. Gaston's 46 strikeouts are the most on the PIlots and the fourth most in the WCC.
• Kaden Segel is tied for first with Rembisz in wins at four and is also second in strikeout-to-walk ratio (4.44), walks allowed per nine innings (1.83) and appearances (16) and eighth in innings pitched (44.1). He's walked just one batter in conference play.
• Portland's 166 bases on balls leads the conference as well as their three shutouts. They are also first in walks allowed per nine innings (3.90) and strikeout-to-walk ratio (2.06) and second in total hits (342) and WHIP (1.50).
• Three Pilots currently are batting over .300 in at least two plate appearances a game and with 75% of games played: Howard (.396), Bean (.333) and Nitowitz (.330).
 
LAST SEASON FOR THE BLUFF BOYS
• It was a landmark season for the Pilots, who finished the year with a 37-19 record overall and a 19-5 WCC record.
• Their win total last season was the highest in a single season in program history. Their 19 conference wins were the most they've had since joining the WCC and the most in any conference season since 1980.
• The Pilots qualified for the WCC Tournament for the third year in a row and made the WCC Tournament Championship for the second year in a row. They narrowly fell to the San Diego Toreros 8-6 in the championship.
• Despite the loss, Jake Holcroft was named the WCC Tournament Most Outstanding Player, becoming the first Pilot to ever win the award. Spencer Scott and Brady Bean each made the All-WCC Tournament Team.
• The Pilots had 10 players earn All-WCC honors this year, with Carter Gaston winning WCC Pitcher of the Year.
• Gaston is just the fourth Pilot to win a major conference award and the second to win WCC Pitcher of the Year in the last three seasons.
• Gaston made the All-WCC First Team along with Nick Brink, Jake Holcroft. Sam Stuhr made the All-WCC Second Team, Tanner Douglas, Tyler Howard, Spencer Scott and Jack Thomson earned honorable mention and Morgan Codron made the freshman team.
• Gaston posted an 11-2 record with a 3.01 ERA, both of which ranked first in the conference. He ranked fifth nationally in wins, and conference-wise he was also fourth in WHIP (1.18) and fifth in walks allowed per nine innings (2.45).
• Brink threw 139 strikeouts, which led the conference by a wide margin and ranked sixth nationally. Brink, who posted a 3.61 ERA with a 10-4 record, led the conference in strikeout-to-walk ratio (5.65, 16th nationally), walks allowed per nine innings (2.08), WHIP (1.08) and complete games (two, 12th nationally), being the only WCC pitcher to throw multiple complete games in a season sine 2015.
• Brink was drafted in the seventh round by the Miami Marlins in the 2025 MLB Draft.
• Holcroft led the conference in total hits (81), hits per game (1.45), steals (21) and runs (62). He was also second in runs per game (1.11) and fourth in RBI's (59).
• Holcroft's hit total was the third most by any Pilot in a season, his RBI total was the third highest and his runs scored total was tied for the most in any single season.
• Patacsil batted a WCC-leading .384 on the season with 68 hits, seven home runs and 49 RBI's. In conference play alone, Patacsil batted an astounding .524 -- over 100 points better than the next closest WCC batter -- while posting the most hits (44), the best on-base percentage (.587) and the second-most RBI's (35).
• Stuhr threw 100 strikeouts with a 3-2 record and a 4.61 ERA. His 100 strikeouts ranked second in the WCC, along with his strikeouts per nine innings total (11.25).
• Stuhr was taken in the fifth round of the 2024 MLB Draft 137th overall by the Oakland Athletics, becoming the highest drafted Pilot since Kory Cast was taken 87th overall by the Montreal Expos in 2003.
• Douglas led the WCC in saves and ranked 14th nationally at 10 and posted a perfect 4-0 record with a 3.32 ERA. He was also named to the watch list for the NCBWA Stopper of the Year, an award that goes to the top reliever in college baseball
• Howard batted .331 on the year with 45 hits, 11 doubles, three home runs and 20 RBI's. He was the only Pilot to post at least three games of four hits or more and had 12 multi-hit games as well as five multi-RBI games.
• Scott hit .316 on the year with 49 hits, 11 doubles, three home runs and 27 RBI's. Scott was named to the WCC All-Tournament Team after batting .538 with seven hits, six runs scored, two RBI's and a double.
• In 41 games, Thomson batted .208 with 26 hits, five home runs and 21 RBI's. Four of those home runs and 17 of those RBI's came against WCC opponents, and his on-base percentage of .482 against conference opponents ranked fifth.
• Codron, a redshirt freshman, made 16 appearances with three starts for Portland, posting a 1-1 record with a 4.63 ERA and three saves.
• Along with Brink and Stuhr, Joey Gartrell was taken in the 15th round by the Boston Red Sox.
 
PRESEASON HONORS
• The Portland Pilots were picked second in the annual WCC Preseason Poll, receiving one first place vote. It's the second year in a row the Pilots were picked to finish second.
• Three Pilots were picked to the All-WCC Preseason Team: infielders Spencer Scott and Zach Toglia and pitching ace Carter Gaston.
• Scott and Gaston both earned All-WCC nods while Toglia, an All-WCC First Team selection in 2023, brought the power to the plate, hitting 10 home runs. Toglia is the first Pilot since Kory Casto to have back-to-back seasons of 10 home runs or more.
• In the D1 Baseball Season Preview for the WCC, Portland was picked to finish second in the conference with a chance to push for the NCAA Regional.
• Gaston was picked as the favorite for WCC Pitcher of the Year while freshman Trey Swygart was highlighted as a potential Freshman of the Year.
• Gaston became the second Pilot ever to be named a Preseason All-American, making the NCBWA Preseason All-American Second Team. He's the second under Geoff Loomis.
• Toglia, as well as pitcher Morgan Codron, were named top 25 prospects for the 2025 MLB draft, with Codron slotting in at 19th and Toglia at 22nd.
 
KEY RETURNERS
• The Pilots return 19 players from last year's squad. Four of those players earned All-WCC honors last year: Gaston (Pitcher of the Year, First Team), Howard (Honorable Mention), Scott (Honorable Mention) and Codron (Freshman Team).
• Four regular starters in the field return along with eight pitchers from last season
• Along with Scott and Toglia, Jace Miller and Jonas Salk are set to be important fixtures in the infield. Miller, a redshirt sophomore, played in just 10 games last year, batting .263 with six RBI's, while Salk played in 50 with 46 starts.
• Salk batted .262 with four home runs and 31 RBI's. He was hit by 18 pitches last season, tied for the second most by a Pilot in a single season and good for third in the WCC.
• Behind the plate, both Tyler Howard and Riley McCarthy will feature prominently. McCarthy played in 31 games with 28 starts, batting .248 with two home runs and 11 RBI's.
• Brady Bean and Henry Muench return as key outfielders for the Pilots. Bean played both infield and outfield for Portland, batting .321 with six home runs and 38 RBI's.
• Bean was also an All-WCC Tournament Team selection in his first year on The Bluff.
• Muench did not play last season due to injury. In 2023, he hit .303 with 37 hits, a homer and 13 RBI's in 41 games.
• Justin Tsukada, Gage Bruce and George Holt also return, rounding out the returning position players for the Pilots.
• Curtis Hebert returns as a two-way player for the Pilots. At the plate, he hit .167 in 19 games while on the mound he posted a 1-0 record in 16 appearances, putting up a 4.05 ERA in 26.2 innings.
• The Pilots bring back five pitchers who saw action last season and eight in total, including Gaston, Codron and Hebert.
• Ryan Rembisz and Kaden Segel each saw action on the mound mostly in relief, with Ryan Rembisz making 18 appearances and Kaden Segel 14 with four starts. Rembisz posted a 4.18 ERA while Segel posted a 7.53.
• Logan Anderson, Ky Hoskinson and Kaden Starr all return as well after not pitching last season.
 
THE NEWCOMERS
• Plenty of fresh faces join the Pilots this season, with 19 newcomers including 13 freshmen and six transfers.
• Cody Nitowitz redshirted at UC Santa Barbara last season, but came in as a three-year letter winner from Cathedral Catholic high School.
• Doyle Kane played 47 games last season with 44 starts for UC San Diego, batting .265 with 43 hits and 20 RBI's. In 2023, he batted a team-high .327 with 66 hits and 39 RBI's.
• Kane spent two seasons at College of the Canyons where he earned All-WSC First Team honors in 2022.
• JT Landwehr transfers from Mount St. Mary's, where he starred as a two-way player for the Mount. He batted .272 with 30 RBI's and an on-base percentage of .443, and on the mound he pitched 11 games, posting a 6.28 ERA.
• Landwehr set an NCAA single-season record after being hit by 39 pitches last year.
• Callum Young joins the Pilots from Everett Community College, where he threw 38 innings in 10 appearances and seven starts. A\ product out of Canada, he had a 3.32 ERA with 38 strikeouts.
• Peter Herrick joins from Edmonds Community College, where last season he made 10 appearances with two starts. He posted a 4.08 ERA with two saves.
• Nolan Hardesty, a lefty pitcher out of Idaho, joins Portland this year as well. He did not make an appearance in the 2024 season.
• Several freshmen are slated to make an impact heading into the 2025 season.
• Aaron Louis comes in as a two-way from San Francisco, playing at Sacred Heart Cathedral Prep. A lefty, Louis had 29 hits last season, batting .319 with four home runs, and also posted a 1.90 ERA with a 6-1 record in 12 appearances.
• Trey Swygart, another two-way player, was named the Preseason Freshman of the Year and will be a key part of the pitching rotation. He was the Idaho 5A Player of the Year last season.
• Ben and Jake Allen come to the Pilots after playing McNary High School.
• Ben Allen was the 24th ranked prospect in Oregon for the 2024 class per Baseball Northwest and was one of the top catchers in the state. Jake Allen is a multi-time All-Central Valley Conference player as well, playing both pitcher and in the outfield.
• The Pilots have several local players along with the Allen brothers who earned OSAA 6A All-State team in 2024, including Quin Dufort, Frankie Rutigliano, Nolan Umlandt, Cole Katayama-Stall and Nolan Miller. Dufort, Rutigliano, Umlandt and Katayama-Stall all made the second team while Miller earned honorable mention.
• Dufort was the PIL Pitcher of the Year back in 2022 and was a first team all-league selection the following year as both a pitcher and an outfielder.
• Rutigliano of North Medford was a standout shortstop at North Medford High School, a four-time All-Southwest Conference selection.
• Umlandt comes from Sherwood High School where he was one of the best arms in the state. Sherwood twice won the Pacific Conference during his time with Sherwood.
• Cole Katayama-Stall was named one of the best infielders in the state at Westview
• Cade Gehlen was a multi-time All-Mt. Hood Conference Selection and was the Mt. Hood Conference Rookie of the Year his freshman year in 2021.
• Ethan Matsuoka rounds out the Oregon prospects. A star for Tualatin High School, the infielder was a mutli-time All-Three Rivers League selection for the Timberwolves.
• From Washington, Connor Cox and Coleman Hollabaugh fill out the rotation for Portland. Cox was a C2BL All-First Team selection for Toutle Lake High School while Hollabaugh was named the 4A NPSL MVP last season for Kennedy Catholic.
 
THE COACHING STAFF
• 2025 marks the 10th year at the helm for head coach Geoff Loomis.
• With 227 career wins as Portland's skipper, Loomis already ranks fourth all-time for total wins at Portland. He is also just the fourth Pilot coach to reach 200 wins.
• Loomis is a Portland baseball alum and UP Athletics Hall of Fame member who still holds the UP program career record for batting average (.376).
• Trey Watt was promoted to associate head coach following the 2024 season and takes over as pitching coach.
• Watt was a pitcher under Loomis at Pacific Lutheran, becoming the second Lute to ever sign a free agent contract.
• Jarvis Gomes returns as the Director for Player Development for his fourth year and Brian Pollard joins the Pilots for his second year this season.
• Also joining the staff is two Pilots from last year's team, with Jake Holcroft signing on as an assistant coach and Ben Patacsil joining as a graduate assistant.
• Holcroft is Portland's all-time leader in games played (227), hits (319), at bats (941), runs scored (193), doubles (57), walks (112) and total bases (448). He's also third all-time in RBI's (161), tied for fifth in stolen bases (53), sixth in batting average (.339), tied for sixth in triples (eight), tied for eighth in home runs (eight).
• Holcroft earned All-WCC First Team honors last season for the third year in a row and was also named the WCC Tournament MVP last May.
• Patacsil thrice earned All-WCC honors, making the first team in his final season. He led the WCC in batting average (.387) and on-base percentage (.464) and hit .524 against WCC opponents specifically, over 100 points higher than the next closest player.
 
ABOUT THE OPPONENT
• The San Diego Toreros are 11-24 on the year and 6-3 in WCC play. Last year, they were the top team in the WCC, finishing 41-15 and 20-4 in conference.
• The Toreros won the regular season and WCC Tournament title last season, making the NCAA Regional. The Pilots played the Toreros a total of five times, including in the WCC Tournament twice.
• The Pilots beat the Toreros in two out of five games last year, falling in both contests in the tournament.
• Brock Ungricht is in his fourth year as head coach of the Toreros.
