LAKE NATOMA, Calif. -- The novice four earned a win in the second heat of the women's novice four races at the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships (WIRAs), guaranteeing that all four boats for Portland would race for the Grand Final on Sunday for their respective races. The Pilots finished second in the varsity eight, second varsity eight and varsity four races as well.
This is the first win of the season for the novice four boat. The novice four was the final boat for the day for Portland, with the Pilots finishing with a time of 7:58.994. Bella Valenzuela was the coxswain while Megan Eckles was the stroke.
Prior to the novice four, all three varsity boats that competed for Portland took second. All races for the varsity boats were just for lanes on Saturday, meaning all the Pilots boats will race in Lane 2. The varsity eight beat Santa Clara and Seattle U to finish behind Sacramento State with a time of 6:53.97. Leahbelle Paladino was the coxswain while Kate Feustel was the stroke.
The second varsity eight followed, finishing with a time of 7:00.855. Clarissa Gutierrez was the coxswain with Gaby Twitchell as the stroke. The varsity four, with Natalie Petty as the coxswain and Claire Banasky as the stroke, took second with a time of 7:43.093.
All four boats will race tomorrow in the grand final of their respective races. The varsity eight will race at 8:30 a.m., the second varsity eight will race at 9:20 a.m., the varsity four will race at 10:40 a.m. while the novice four will start at 12:20 p.m. Check PortlandPilots.com for more information.
