SAN BRUNO, Calif. – Portland Pilots Baseball had five players make the 2025 WCC All-Academic Team on Monday, with Carter Gaston, Tyler Howard, Henry Muench, Jonas Salk and Zach Toglia all making the squad. The Pilots also had five players earn honorable mention: Brady Bean, Curtis Hebert, Riley McCarthy, Ryan Rembisz and Spencer Scott.
Portland's five players on the team are the most for any WCC team since 2014. The Pilots put five on the team for the first time since 2013, tying a program record for WCC All-Academic First Team selections.
Gaston makes the team for the second year in a row. He's started the most games of any Pilot pitcher this season at 13, pitching 66.2 innings with a 3-8 record and 6.61 ERA. He is one of three WCC pitchers to have thrown a complete game of at least seven innings this season, doing so against the Santa Clara Broncos on May 2.
Howard has been one of the top batters in the WCC this season, batting a conference-leading .372 with nine doubles, three home runs and 26 RBI's. He recorded a 32-game on-base streak earlier this season that was the longest by any Pilot since Ben Ortman in 1993. Howard also leads the WCC in on-base percentage (.478), is tied for sixth in walks (29) and also leads the WCC in walks against conference opponents (18). This is the first time he's made the WCC All-Academic Team.
Muench also makes the WCC All-Academic First Team for the first time in his career. Muench has played in 31 games this year with 14 starts, primarily starring in center field. He's hit .161 in those 31 games.
Salk makes his first WCC All-Academic Team in what's been a career-year for the infielder. He's hitting .291 with 13 home runs, 11 doubles and 43 RBI's in 46 games (43 starts). His 13 home runs are the most by a Pilot since 2008 and also rank fourth in the WCC. Against conference opponents, Salk also leads the WCC in slugging percentage (.807), ranks third in home runs (nine) and OPS (1.287), fourth in runs scored (24) and doubles (nine), seventh in RBI's (26) and eighth in batting average (.373).
Toglia rounds out the All-Academic Team honorees for Portland, making the squad for the first time. He's batted .262 in 50 games (49 starts) with 11 home runs and 37 RBI's. With 11 home runs, he became the first Pilot since Rick Falkner in 1988 to post three consecutive seasons with 10 home runs or more. His 31 home runs as a Pilot ranks third all-time.
The Pilots qualified for the WCC Baseball Tournament for the fourth straight season, slotting in as the fifth seed with a 13-11 WCC record and a 22-29 record overall. They will play the 4-seed LMU Lions on Wednesday, May 21 at 6:05 p.m. Check PortlandPilots.com for live stats and video options.
