SAN BRUNO, Calif. – For the first time this season, Portland Pilots right-handed pitcher Will Labonte was named the WCC Co-Freshman of the Week. He's the third Pilot to earn honors this season, with his award marking the second straight the week the Pilots have earned a weekly award.
Labonte was stellar in his Sunday start, going a career-high six innings and allowing just one run with five strikeouts against one of the top hitting teams in the conference. It's the fifth time in seven appearances that Labonte has allowed one run or fewer as well. Labonte has been one of the top pitchers in the conference, ranking third in the WCC in ERA (1.98), 43rd nationally and fourth among all freshmen.
The Pilots continue to impress, having won nine of their last 10 games five straight weekend series after going 3-1 overall against the Northwestern Wildcats and Saint Mary's Gaels last week. Portland is now 17-8 overall and 5-1 in WCC play, holding the best overall record in the conference.
The Pilots will visit No. 20 Oregon on Tuesday with a 5 p.m. first pitch at PK Park. Portland returns to WCC action with a three-game series at Seattle U Thursday through Saturday. Visit PortlandPilots.com for links to live stats and video options.
