SIMI VALLEY, Calif. --- Portland senior Terence Macatangay shot a three-under par 213 (77-67-69) and finished in the top ten individually to help the Pilots to a sixth-place finish at the Bill Cullum Invitational, which concluded on Tuesday at the Wood Ranch Golf Club. Macatangay’s seventh-place finish is UP’s best individual showing this fall.
His second-round 67 was also just two strokes off of matching the UP program’s 18-hole record low score, which was recorded by Ryan Nelson in 1998.
Pacific ran away with the team title, setting a tournament scoring record in the process. The Tigers’ team score of 843 (-21) was eight strokes better than runner-up UC Riverside (851). Tournament host Cal State Northridge (863) was third, UC Santa Barbara (865) was fourth and Oral Roberts rounded out the top five with an 867.
UP just missed a top-five finish with a team score of 874 (308-281-285). Portland easily set a season-low score for a tournament, while the second-round 281 was the low round of the fall.
Pacific also took home medalist honors as the Tigers’ Alex Johnson finished on top of the field. Johnson finished with a nine-under par 207 to hold off Northridge’s Nick Delio and Riverside’s Kevin Fitzgerald, who both carded an eight-under 208.
Macatangay’s 213 is the lowest 54-hole round for the Pilots this season.
Portland freshman Nick Chianello finished strong with a three-under par 69 on the final day of the 17-team event. Chianello tied for 32nd overall with a career-low 220. Junior Justin Smithhisler was perhaps UP’s most consistent golfer, firing a 75 and two 73’s for a 221. He finished just behind Chianello in 34th place.
Junior Jake Wagner shot a second-round 69 en route to a 222 and a 35th-place finish. Sophomore Mike Johansen shot a 234 to cap the scoring for Portland.
The Pilots have one more event scheduled for the fall slate. Portland is set to compete at the Saint Mary’s Invitational at Poppy Hills Golf Club in Pebble Beach, Calif., on Nov. 9-10.
