HOLLISTER, Calif. --- Portland senior Justin Smithhisler, who shot a second-round 69 on Monday, tied for seventh overall to help the Pilots finish strong at the West Coast Conference Championships, which concluded on Tuesday at the San Juan Oaks Golf Club. The Pilots made up seven shots during the final two rounds to jump two spots and finish tied for sixth place with Gonzaga.
Smithhisler was Portland’s highest individual finisher after shooting a two-over par 219. He closed with an even-par 72 on Tuesday after opening with a 77 on Monday morning. His 69 on Monday afternoon featured two eagles, both on par fives, and matched the lowest score of the second round.
San Diego’s Alex Ching fired a five-under par 67 on the final day to jump nine spots and move into a tie on top of the leader board with Taylor Travis of San Francisco, forcing a sudden victory playoff. Travis would birdie the second hole of the playoff to claim medalist honors. Both Travis and Ching carded an overall score of 212, while USF’s James Black was a stroke back in third place.
The Dons, who placed three individuals in the top six, were able to hold off Pepperdine to win the team title. USF’s 860 (-4) was six strokes better than the Waves.
After opening with a 307 on Monday, the Pilots posted scores of 294 and 299 to pass LMU and catch Gonzaga, which matched Portland’s total team score of 900.
Smithhisler landed on the WCC's All-Conference Team, while head coach Bill Winter was named the league's Co-Coach of the Year. This is the second coach of the year honor for Winter, who was also named the conference's top coach in 2008.
Behind Smithhisler came sophomore teammate Nick Chianello, who was steady en route to a 227 (+11). Chianello shot a 75 and two 76’s, which tied him for 26th. Senior Jake Wagner tied Chianello with a 227 and was helped with a second-round 72.
Next came junior Mike Johansen, whose final round of 74 allowed him to shoot a 228, and freshman Jarrett Foote with a 237
