SIMI VALLEY, Calif. --- The Portland Pilots, who began the day in the lead, finished fourth at the 15-team Bill Cullum Invitational, which concluded on Tuesday at the Wood Ranch Golf Club. Senior Jake Wagner was Portland’s top finisher, tying for 12th with a one-over par 217 (70-71-76) on the par 72 course.
On Monday, the Pilots shot a 286 and a 295 during the opening rounds to sit on top of the field with a 581. But Portland combined for a 300 during Tuesday’s third and final round, coming in with an 881.
UC Riverside closed with a team score of 287 on Tuesday allowing the Highlanders to win the team title with an 871. San Jose State was two strokes back in second place with an 873, while tournament host Cal State Northridge was third with an 880.
Northridge also featured the medalist winner as Nick Delio finished with an eight-under par 208. His final-round 67 (-5) was more than enough to hold off Cal State Bakersfield’s Chase Goodwin and Riverside’s Kevin Fitzgerald, who tied for second place with a 212 (-4).
Wagner was one of four Pilots to finish in the top 25. Sophomore Nick Chianello (74-74-73) and junior Sam Kloenne (71-76-74) tied for 22nd with a five-over 221, while senior Justin Smithhisler tied for 25th with a 222 (71-74-77). Freshman Jarrett Foote concluded the scoring for Portland with a 233.
The tourney concludes a successful fall campaign for the Pilots, who posted two third-place finishes in addition to setting some new program scoring records. At the Palouse Cougar Classic in September, Portland set a new team 18-hole scoring mark (272) and a new 36-hole scoring record (553). During the first round, Chianello fired a program record low round of 64, breaking the pervious mark which had stood since 1998.
