BEAUMONT, Calif. --- Portland senior Justin Smithhisler, who opened with a two-under par 70 on Monday morning, finished at three-over par with a 219 to tie for 12th overall and lead the Pilots at the three-round Braveheart Classic at Oak Valley Golf Club. Smithhisler closed with a 73 during the final round on Tuesday.
It’s the third top-20 finish of the season for Smithhisler, which helped the Pilots finish seventh as a team with an 893.
Long Beach State claimed the team title, while LMU’s Jake Sarnoff took home medalist honors after finishing at minus eight for the tournament. Sarnoff’s 208 was three strokes better than runner-up Anders Engell of Saint Mary’s.
The 49ers finished with an 870, while LMU finished in second place with an 872. Next came The Gaels in third place with an 877.
Portland sophomore Nick Chianello just missed finishing in the top 20, checking in at 23rd with a seven-over par 223. Junior Mike Johansen had a solid showing, finishing a stroke back of Chianello with a 224. Behind Johansen came senior Jake Wagner (236) and freshman Daniel Snoey (241).
UP freshman Jarrett Foote (232) and junior Cory Schmidt (241) competed as individuals.
The Pilot next look to conclude the 2010-11 season at the West Coast Conference Championships the San Juan Oaks Golf Club in Hollister, Calif. The tourney will run April 18-19.
