RENO, Nev. --- Portland junior Justin Smithhisler opened with a one-under par during Monday’s first round before finishing with a two-over total of 218 to lead the Pilots at the Wolf Pack Classic, which concluded on Tuesday at Wolf Run Golf Club. Smithhisler tied for 21st individually at the two-day, three-round tournament.
He followed a second-round 73 with a 74 on Tuesday.
Wichita State’s Dustin Garza finished three stokes better than the rest of the field to claim medalist honors and help the Shockers win the team title. Garza fired an 11-under par 205 (67-67-71), while Fresno State’s Bhavik Patel and Kansas State’s Joe Kinney tied for second place with an eight-under 208.
Wichita State held of the San Diego Toreros during the final round to take home the trophy. The Shockers’ final score of 847 was two strokes better than San Diego, which closed with a torrid 275 during the final round. Host Nevada was third with an 853, while Fresno State and Kansas State tied for fourth place with an 855.
As a team the Pilots shot three rounds in the 200’s (297-297-296) to finish in 13th place with a total of 890.
Portland senior Terence Macatangay fired a two-under par 70 on Friday to help him to a 39th-place finish with a 221. Freshman Nick Chianello wasn’t far behind with a 225, while juniors Jake Wagner and Thomas Robertson shot a 228 and 235, respectively.
The Pilots are next scheduled to take the course at the Bill Cullum Invitational at Wood Ranch Golf Club in Simi Valley, Calif., later this month. The two-day tourney hosted by Cal State Northridge is set to begin on Monday, Oct. 26.
