PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. --- The Portland Pilots wrapped up the fall slate with a 14th-place showing at the Saint Mary’s Invitational, which concluded on Tuesday at Poppy Hills Golf Club. Senior Terence Macatangay posted Portland’s lowest score.
Macatangay opened the tourney on a roll, firing a 71 and a 73 during the first two rounds on the par 72 course. He’d settle for a 228 en route to a 42nd-place finish.
Four Nevada golfers finished in the top 20, allowing the Wolf Pack to claim the team title at the 16-team, three-round tournament. Nevada’s 869 was four strokes better than runner-up Oregon State. San Diego (875) was third, Denver (881) was fourth and UC Irvine (885) finished fifth.
San Francisco’s Domingo Jojola finished with back-to-back 69’s to claim medalist honors for the second straight year. Jojola fired a seven-under par 209, while second-place finisher Diego Velasquez of Oregon State shot a 212.
The Pilots shot a 912 (300-304-308) as a team. Freshman Nick Chianello was UP’s top finisher following Macatangay. Chianello’s 229 (75-80-74) landed him a tie for 48th. Behind Chianello came juniors Justin Smithhisler with a 234 (78-78-78), Jake Wagner with a 236 (76-84-76) and Thomas Robertson, who also shot a 236 (83-73-80).
Portland’s next tournament is set for the final week in February in Chandler, Ariz. The two-day Whirlwind-Snowman classic is scheduled to begin on Feb. 22.
