FULLERTON, Calif. -- The University of Portland women’s tennis team swept the Cal State Fullerton Titans 7-0 on Sunday to rebound from a 6-1 defeat at the hands of the Santa Clara Broncos during the first half of its California road trip.
Portland’s scheduled match versus WCC opponent San Francisco on Sunday, March 1 was cancelled due to rain.
The Pilots, who are coached by Susie Campbell-Gross, now sit at 3-4 and 0-1 WCC.
Portland has been led this season by junior Megan Sporndli, who has gone undefeated in the singles No. 1 position during the last four-straight matches. She has also won four-straight matches in the doubles No. 1 position with the help of partner sophomore Stephanie Fuchs.
The Pilots capitalized on a shuffled Fullerton (2-9, 0-2 Big West) line-up as the Titans were playing without their No. 1 singles player, Erin Wiesener, and No. 3 singles player, Shelly Injejikian. Jenna Tanzer was given the biggest challenge of the day by Titan Brandy Andrews in the singles No. 4 position. Andrews fought back after being downed by Tanzer in the first set 6-1 to win the second set 6-2. But Tanzer found her flow again in the third set to seize the match with a 6-1 third set win.
Earlier that week, Portland was defeated in its first conference match of the season by Santa Clara (5-5, 1-1 WCC) in Santa Clara, Calif. Sporndli earned the sole team point with a three-set victory in the singles No. 1 spot.
Portland completes its California road trip with three matches in three days starting Wednesday, March 11 against Cal State Bakersfield at Fullerton, Calif. First serve is set for 2:00 p.m. On Thursday, March 12 the Pilots face UC Riverside at Riverside, Calif. at 2:00 p.m., which is followed by a match versus Furman University in San Diego, Calif. at 10:00 a.m.
