CORVALLIS, Ore. --- Portland senior Terence Macatangay and junior Justin Smithhisler both finished in the top 20 individually to pace the Pilots at the Giustina Memorial Classic, which concluded on Tuesday at Trysting Tree Golf Club. It’s the first tournament of the fall season for UP.
Tournament host Oregon State (844) easily won the team title, finishing nine strokes better than runner-up Washington State. Oregon was third with an 857, Nevada was fourth with an 868 and Cal Poly rounded out the top five with a score of 869.
Portland moved up a spot on the final day and finished in seventh with a team score of 896 (294-299-303).
Macatangay fired a final-round 72 (E) to move into the top 20. He opened with a 72 and a 75 during Monday’s opening rounds and finished with a three-over par 219, good for 19th place overall. Smithhisler opened with a one-under 71 on Monday, before coming home with a 74 and 75 to finish a stroke back of Macatangay in 20th place.
Washington State’s Trent Sanders held off the rest of the field to claim medalist honors with a nine-under par 207 (68-68-71). Oregon’s John Paton was a stroke back in second place, while OSU’s Diego Velasquez was third with a 209.
Portland freshman Nick Chianello finished 35th in his first collegiate tournament with a three-round total of 229. Senior Thomas Robertson carded a 232, while sophomore Sam Kloenne shot a 233 at the ten-team event.
The Pilots return to the course next week at the Wolf Pack Classic in Reno, Nev. The two-day tourney tees off on Monday, Oct. 5 at the Wolf Run Golf Club.
