MORAGA, Calif. — Senior Lacey Plfibsen posted two big singles wins as the University of Portland women’s tennis team concluded play at the 2010 SMC Fall Invitational on Sunday. Playing at the Timothy Korp Tennis Complex and Moraga Country Club, Pflibsen posted a 2-2 singles record in the tournament’s top flight.

Opening against a member of the defending national champion Stanford Cardinal, Pflibsen topped Amelia Herring in the opening round of 32. After dropping her second round match to Alex Poorta of Saint Mary’s, Pflibsen toppled her second Pac-10 opponent in Cal’s Stephany Chang. Pflibsen’s 6-0, 6-1 victory over Chang was part of the Saturday Round Robin Consolation. In her Sunday Round Robin Consolation match, Pflibsen lost to Claire Soper of Saint Mary’s.

In the White and Blue singles flights, the Pilots were held winless. Senior Stephanie Fuchs dropped four matches, while freshman Emily Mahairas finished the weekend 0-3 in her debut as a Pilot.

On the doubles side, Pflibsen and Fuchs dropped three matches in the Red Flight. Teaming with Elaine Chesoni of Santa Clara, Mahairas dropped an opening round doubles match. In the consolation semifinals, Mahairas and Chesoni defeated a team from San Jose State before losing out in the finals to Carolina O’Haren and Eleanor Ford of Santa Clara.

After a weekend away from the courts, the University of Portland women return to action on Oct. 22 at the ITA Regional Championships in Palo Alto, Calif. The four-day tournament will wrap up the fall season for the Pilots.
