CHANDLER, Ariz. --- Junior Justin Smithhisler finished 11th overall and Portland placed fifth as a team as the Pilots opened the men’s golf spring schedule at the WSU Snowman Getaway, which concluded on Tuesday at the Cattail Course of the Whirlwind Golf Club. Freshman Nick Chianello also had a top-15 showing for Portland, coming in a tie for 13th.
Smithhisler began the final day of the two-day, three-round tourney at one-under par. He finished with a five-over 221 (72-71-78) for his second top-20 finish of the 2009-10 campaign. Chianello cards his first career top-20 placing, finishing a stroke back of Smithhisler. Chianello opened Monday with a first-round, one-under par 71, before totaling a 222 (71-73-78).
Brett Iliff of Missouri-Kansas City posted three rounds under par to claim medalist honors. His five-under par 211 (70-71-70) on the par 72 course was two stokes better than Air Force’s Tom Whitney and Idaho’s Brad Tensen, who tied for second place with a 213.
Host school Washington State, which had three golfers finish in the top 20, took home the team title. The Cougars’ score of 871 was seven strokes better than runner-up Missouri. Idaho was third with an 879 and Missouri-Kansas City finished fourth with an 883.
The Pilots opened with two sub-300 rounds, before coming in with a 902 (294-299-309).
Portland junior Jake Wagner tied for 41st with a 232 (73-84-75), while senior Terence Macatangay was two strokes back in 49th place after shooting three straight 78’s. Fellow senior Thomas Robertson finished with a 241 (82-77-82).
Portland’s spring schedule continues at the Braveheart Classic next week at the Oak Valley Golf Club in Beaumont, Calif. The two-day tourney begins on Monday, March 1.
