PAUMA VALLEY, Calif. --- Portland junior Justin Smithhisler finished seventh overall to lead four Pilots in the top 20 at the USF Triumph at Pauma Valley, which wrapped up on Tuesday at Pauma Valley Country Club. Freshman Nick Chianello tied for 18th and senior Terence Macatangay and junior Jake Wagner tied for 20th for the Pilots, who finished fourth as a team at the 12-team, three-round tourney.
It’s the third straight top-20 finish for Smithhisler this spring and his first top-10 placing of the year. He finished with an 11-over par 224 (73-74-77) on the par 71 course and was 13 strokes back of the tourney winner, Tom Whitney of Air Force.
Whitney closed with a tournament-low 68 on Tuesday to come in with a two-under 211 overall. He easily finished four strokes ahead of runner-up Steven Lecuyer of Central Arkansas.
Lecuyer’s Central Arkansas team took home the team title, finishing just in front of tournament host San Francisco. The Bears (889) finished five strokes better than the Dons (894). In third was Long Beach State with an 895, while the Pilots (909) and Air Force (917) rounded out the top five.
Chianello cards his second top-20 of the spring and the second of his career. On Monday afternoon, Chianello tied for the low score of the second round with a one-under par 70. He’d finish with a 228 and his 10 birdies were tied for second most at the tournament.
Macatangay has two top-20 placings this year, but this is his first of the spring schedule. His second round of 73 was sandwiched with a pair of 78’s, for a total of 229. Wagner also had a 229 and he recorded one of Portland’s two eagles at the tourney, Smithhisler claimed the other, en route to his best showing of the year.
UP sophomore Mike Johansen tied for 44th, finishing with a 241.
The Pilots are scheduled to play at one more tournament before heading to the West Coast Conference Championships in April. The Oregon Duck Invitational is set for March 22-23 at Shadow Hills Country Club in Junction City, Ore.
