BEAUMONT, Calif. --- Portland junior Justin Smithhisler tied for 18th individually to pace the Pilots at the Braveheart Classic, which concluded on Tuesday at the Oak Valley Golf Club. It’s the second top-20 during the spring slate for Smithhisler, who finished 11th at the Snowman Getaway in February.
The three-round, 18-team tourney was suspended in the middle of the second round due to darkness on Monday. The field wrapped up the second round prior to the final round on Tuesday on the par 72 course.
Smithhisler sandwiched an 80 with an even par 72 and a final-round, one-under 71 to finish with a 223 (+7).
Arizona’s Tarquin MacManus claimed medalist honors after following two 72’s with a six-under 66 on the final day. His 210 (-6) was two stokes better than runner-up Jake Sarnoff of Loyola Marymount.
MacManus’ individual title helped the Wildcats win the team title as well. Arizona totaled an 858 to easily finish on the top of the field. Long Beach State was a distant second with an 878, while Cal State Northridge and Santa Clara tied for third at 885. LMU was a stroke back in fifth place.
Portland totaled a 915 (301-306-308) for the tourney and finished in 11th place.
Senior Terence Macatangay was Portland’s next top finisher following Smithhisler, coming in a tie for 39th. Macatangay shot a 229 (77-76-76). Behind Macatangay came senior Thomas Robertson with a 233 (77-72-84), junior Jake Wagner with a 235 (75-80-80) and freshman Nick Chianello with a 238 (79-78-81).
Portland next heads to Pauma Valley, Calif., for the USF Triumph in mid-March. The two-day tourney is set to begin on March 15 at Pauma Valley Country Club.
