JUNCTION CITY, Ore. --- Portland freshman Nick Chianello, who was tied for first place after the opening round, finished tied for sixth overall to lead the Pilots at the Oregon Duck Invitational, which concluded on Tuesday at Shadow Hills Country Club. It’s the first career top-10 showing for Chianello, who has finished in the top 20 in three of UP’s four tournaments this spring.
Chianello came out on fire during Monday morning’s opening round and was tied for the lead after firing a career low round of 68 on the par 72 course. After slipping a bit with a second-round 75, Chianello finished strong with a 70, giving him a three-under total of 213. He was four strokes off the pace.
Oregon’s Daniel Miernicki, who closed with a five-under par 67 on Tuesday, came from behind to claim medalist honors. His 209 (-7) was two strokes better than teammate Eugene Wong, who tied for second with Idaho’s Stefan Richardson.
The one-two finish by Miernicki and Wong allowed the Ducks to win the team title with a seven-under 1,073. Arkansas was second with a 1,080, Oregon State finished third with a 1,088, Idaho was fourth with a score of 1,101 and Washington State capped the top five with a 1,102.
The Pilots finished 11th with a 1,120 (372-372-376).
The 13-team invitational featured six golfers from each school, with the lowest five scores each round counting towards the team’s total. Most collegiate golf tourneys include five golfers and four counting scores.
Portland junior Justin Smithhisler finished strong, following a second-round 71 with a 74 on Tuesday. His total of 222 was good for a tie for 31st. Behind him came sophomore Sam Kloenne, who opened with an even-par 72. He tied for 36th and was a stroke back of Smithhisler.
Senior Terence Macatangay was consistent each round, carding two 76’s and a 75 for a total of 227. He tied for 58th. Next came sophomore Mike Johansen (235) and senior Thomas Robertson (239).
Next up for the Pilots are the West Coast Conference Championships, set for April 19-20 at Hiddenbrooke Golf Club in Vallejo, Calif.
