VALLEJO, Calif. --- Portland senior Terence Macatangay ended his collegiate career by leading the Pilots at the West Coast Conference Championships, which ended on Tuesday at Hiddenbrooke Golf Club. Macatangay was UP’s most consistent golfer at the tourney and finished tied for 23rd overall.
Macatangay shot a second-round 75 on the par 72 course and finished with a two-day, three-round total of 232 at the eight-team conference tourney.
Pepperdine claimed the team title, giving the Waves a sweep of both the men’s and women’s conference crowns. The Pepperdine men finished with an 887 to finish just ahead of San Diego (892) in second place. Santa Clara (896) was third, San Francisco (898) finished fourth and Saint Mary’s rounded out the top five with a 903.
Portland finished with a 943 as a team and was able to catch Gonzaga on the final day as the two teams tied for sixth place. LMU was eighth with a 950.
San Diego’s Gunner Wiebe claimed medalist honors by shooting an even par 72 during the final round, giving him an even par total of 216. Two strokes back in second place was Carl Smith IV of Pepperdine, while San Francisco’s Ji Hwan Park was in third place with a 219.
Portland freshman Nick Chianello, who is enjoying a fine spring season and a solid first year on The Bluff, and junior Jake Wagner tied for 27th and were UP’s next top finishers following Macatangay. Chianello, who opened with a team-low round of 74 on Monday, and Wagner both shot a 234.
UP junior Justin Smithhisler, who is also having a strong spring season, shot a 243, while sophomore Samuel Kloenne finished with a 256.
