PORTLAND — The University of Portland women’s tennis team dropped its second match of the spring in a 6-1 decision to UC Davis, despite victories in doubles and singles action by senior Lacey Pflibsen.
The first point of the day was awarded to the Aggies (2-2) with 8-6 victories in both the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles spot. Although the Pilots (0-2) had already dropped the doubles point, Pflibsen and freshman Alice Tucker won their first match as a doubles team. In a tight 9-7 decision Pflibsen and Tucker toppled the UC Davis No. 1 doubles team of Megan Heneghan and Kelly Chui.
The Pilots picked up the first point of singles play as Pflibsen won in straight sets over Dahra Zamudio in the No. 1 spot (6-2, 6-1). Pflibsen’s victory was her first of the 2011 dual season and improved her overall record to 5-6 with her tournament record included.
At No. 3 singles, Tucker battled to three sets before surrendering the point to UC Davis’ Ellie Edles. The Aggies secured the victory at the No. 5 singles when Kelly Chui topped Portland sophomore Beate Valdmane competing in her first home match after arriving to The Bluff from South Carolina State.
University of Portland surrendered the next two matches, despite strong play from sophomore Valeska Hoath in the No. 6 position, battling to three sets after taking the second set from Lauren Curry.
The Pilots return to the Louisiana-Pacific Tennis Center tomorrow at 9 a.m. when they host the Montana Grizzlies.
