PORTLAND — The University of Portland women’s tennis team had no trouble dispatching the visiting Lewis-Clark State College Warriors on Friday as the Pilots shutout LCSC 7-0 at the Louisiana-Pacific Tennis Center.
Portland (5-3) won all six singles matches in straight sets over the NAIA opponents. The Warriors (2-5) dropped all three doubles matches, including the No. 3 match in which the Pilots Valeska Hoath and Beate Valdmane combined for an impressive 8-0 victory. For the Pilots No. 1 doubles team of Lacey Pflibsen and Alice Tucker the win was the sixth of the season, and at No. 2 Sabine and Stephanie Fuchs improved to 5-2 on the year.
In singles play, Hoath impressed by not surrendering a single game to opponent Samantha Teigen and in doing so continued a strong spring improving her record to 6-1 (dual).
At No. 6 singles, freshman Gabrielle Gorence picked up her first collegiate victory with a 6-3, 7-6 decision. Last week against Linfield, Gorence began her match, but after a set the match was not finished.
Portland continues the spring campaign on February 26 when it plays host to Northern Colorado at 10 a.m. inside the Louisiana-Pacific Tennis Center.
