SEATTLE, Wash. — A road trip to Seattle for the Pilots women’s tennis team yielded mixed results as Portland opened Sunday with a 4-3 win over Seattle at the Seattle University Tennis Courts, before falling Monday to No. 27 Washington in a 5-2 decision at the Nordstrom Tennis Center.
Portland (9-4) opened its weekend by securing the doubles point against the Redhawks (3-13) as head coach Susie Campbell-Gross sent out a different, but successful, doubles grouping. At No. 1 Sabine Fuchs and Valeska Hoath won for the first time as a doubles team, while Beate Valdmane and Gabrielle Gorence earned their second victory of the season at No. 3.
Fuchs’ sister Stephanie earned a straight set victory at No. 1, as did Hoath at No. 4. The final Pilots victory came at No. 3 as Valdmane battled to a three set victory.
On Monday Portland was unable to best the No. 27 Huskies (10-7) dropping the doubles point as only Valdmane and Gorence were able to pull out a pairs win at No. 3.
Losses to ranked opponents befell the Fuchs sisters at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, but it was in the final two matches of the afternoon that Portland avoided being shutout. At No. 6 Emily Mahairas won a three set match over Kelli Feeley, despite Feeley holding a 9-4 lead at one point during the final set.
Hoath recorded her team high tenth dual victory of the spring in three sets at No. 4 singles.
Portland opens conference play against Gonzaga on Saturday, March 26 at 10 a.m. inside the Louisiana-Pacific Tennis Center on the University of Portland Campus.
