RIVERSIDE, Calif. — With a the double point in hand, the University of Portland women’s tennis team got the three singles victories needed to secure a 4-3 win over UC-Riverside on Monday at the Student Recreation Center Tennis Courts on the UC-Riverside campus.
The doubles point was earned as Valeska Hoath and Lacey Pflibsen earned a tight 8-6 victory at No. 1. At No. 2 the Fuchs sisters Sabine and Stephanie picked up an 8-5 win, putting the Pilots (8-3) up 1-0 on the Highlanders (4-8).
Only needing three victories in singles play to earn the win, Portland picked up wins at Nos. 1, 3 and 5 to clinch. At No. 1 Pflibsen knocked off Taylor Raney in straight sets to earn her eleventh win of the season and seventh in spring dual play.
Also earning straight set victories was Sabine Fuchs at No. 3 and Valeska Hoath at No. 5. Fuchs’ win was her fourth at No. 3 singles and seventh of the season, while Hoath earned her team-high eighth dual victory.
Portland will take some time off before returning to competitive action on March 20, when it travels north to Seattle for a two-match swing against Seattle and on March 21 against the No. 20 Washington Huskies.
