Lions Escape Portland with 5-2 over Pilots
PORTLAND, Ore. --- Junior Valeska Hoath and sophomore Alice Tucker picked up singles victories for the Portland Pilots, but the LMU Lions picked up the doubles point along with a pair of three set victories early in the match to escape the Louisiana Pacific Tennis with a 5-2 win over Portland Saturday afternoon.
Portland falls to 5-14 on the season with an 0-6 mark in the West Coast Conference. LMU wins their fourth straight conference match, improving to 7-13 overall and 4-3 in the WCC.
Hoath continued her recent hot streak with a dominant 6-1, 6-0 victory in the third spot. The Australian native has been a solid player for the Pilots this season and has won four of her last five.
Tucker also picked up a victory for the Pilots from the fourth spot, taking down Miya Jin in a 7-6, 5-7, 10-3 match to capture the point.
LMU caught a couple of breaks in the top two spots, however, to escape with the victory. After freshman Anastasia Polyakova and Sabine Fuchs each took their respective first sets, the Lions rebounded to take the next two. The Lions’ resurgence turned what would have been a 4-3 Pilots victory into a 5-2 Lions win on the final home match of the season for Portland.
The Pilots wrap-up the regular season next week on the road with a pair of 11 a.m. matches in California. Portland begins the trip in San Francisco on Saturday before taking on Santa Clara on Sunday. After that, the Pilots head to San Diego, where the WCC Tournament will be held beginning April 26.
