PORTLAND, Ore. --- The University of Portland women’s tennis team opened their 2012 fall campaign last weekend at the Cougar Classic hosted by Washington State University in Pullman, Wash. The young Pilots team posted a 14-13 record throughout their singles matches over the weekend.
Competing in the second flight of the Cougar Classic, freshman Saroop Dhatt fought her way to the quarterfinals before losing to Montana State’s Precious Gbadamosi (6-1, 7-5). Dhatt would come back in her consolation match and defeat Gonzaga’s Melanie Yates (6-2, 6-1).
Junior Gabby Gorence and sophomore Katy Krauel also saw individual success in the third flight of the Cougar Classic. Both Pilots made it to the quarterfinals before dropping their respective matches in straight sets. Krauel would go on to win a tough, three-set bout (6-3, 4-6, 1-0 [10-4]) in her consolation match.
In the first flight of the doubles competition, Senior Sabine Fuchs and Sophomore Anastasia Polyakova would team up and make their way to the quarterfinals of the bracket before being stopped by Montana State (2-8). This would end up being their only loss on the weekend, as they came back to win their consolation match against Washington State (8-4).
The Pilots return to the court Sept. 28 for their Mock Dual against Gonzaga in Spokane, Wash.
