Cougars Hold off Portland in Wednesday Affair
PROVO, Utah --- The Portland Pilots women’s tennis team played a rare mid-week road match on Wednesday, ceding a 5-2 decision to the BYU Cougars as West Coast Conference play resumed.
Portland (7-7, 1-2 WCC) picked up wins from the top two spots, but the Cougars (7-5, 1-0 WCC) were able to take the doubles points and the remaining singles points en route to the victory.
After BYU had taken the doubles point, Portland’s top two players responded to give the Pilots the lead. Freshman Maja Mladenovic quickly knocked off Desiree Tran (6-4, 6-2) in the No. 1 position as sophomore Anastasia Polyakova took care of Morgan Anderson by the same score in the second position.
The Pilots were close in the third and fourth spots as well, with senior Sabine Fuchs taking Meghan Sheehan-Dizon to three sets. In the fourth position, BYU’s Nicolette Tran edged freshman Tori Troesch, 6-4, 7-5.
Senior Valeska Hoath, who leads the Pilots with eight wins this season, did not play.
Portland returns to the Louisiana-Pacific Tennis Center on Saturday for another WCC match, taking on the No. 45 San Diego Toreros (5-6, 0-1 WCC) at 10 a.m.
