Mladenovic Extends Win Streak in Pilots Loss to No. 73 Lions
LOS ANGELES, Calif. --- Freshman Maja Mladenovic extended her dual match winning streak to eight on Friday, posting a three set victory over April Bisharat. It was the only point for the Pilots, however, as the No. 73 Loyola Marymount Lions finished on top 6-1.
Portland slips to 8-10 overall with a 1-4 record in the West Coast Conference. LMU improves to 8-7 and is now 1-2 in the WCC.
In the doubles round, the Lions secured the point early by taking the first and third matches. Portland tandem Valeska Hoath and Tori Troesch played well together, posting an 8-4 victory on the second court.
The Lions created problems for Portland on in the singles matches as well, taking the first two singles points with easy to go up 3-0.
But Portland would not go down easily as the remaining four matches would all go to three sets, dragging out the match and making LMU earn the team win.
As Mladenovic held off Bisharat on court 1, freshman Tori Troesch (court 5) and Saroop Dhatt (court 6) were tangled in competitive matches. Sophomore Anastasia Polyakova was also battling on the second court.
Although Troesch and Polyakova each won their respective first sets, they would each ultimately fall in the decisive third set. Dhatt, meanwhile, came extremely close to picking up the win, but her opponent Reka Rohonyi claimed a 13-11 victory in the tiebreaker.
Portland resumes play on Saturday at Pepperdine with an 11 a.m. contest.
