Pilots Open Beach Winter Classic with Solid Results

LONG BEACH, Calif. - The Portland women's tennis team won its top five singles matches and No. 1 doubles match in the first day of the Beach Tennis Winter Classic on Friday at Long Beach State. Portland opened the three-day round robin style tournament facing CSU-Northridge in singles and No. 41 Long Beach State in doubles.

Sophomores Lucia Butkovska and Jelena Lazarevic combined for Portland's lone doubles win against the 49ers at the No. 1 position.

In singles action, the Pilots took the top five matches in straight sets. Butkovska opens the 2015 spring season ranked No. 60 nationally and cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 win over CSUN's Vivian Lin. Portland junior Maja Mladenovic, ranked No. 104 nationally, defeated Mickey Hsu 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 2 position.

Lazerevic, senior Sophie van den Aarssen and junior Saroop Dhatt also posted singles wins for the Pilots on Friday.
The action continues for Portland on Saturday at 11 a.m. with doubles against CSUN and singles versus New Mexico.
