MORAGA, Calif. – Pilot freshman Radina Dimitrova reached the finals of her draw and senior Maja Mladenovic won the consolation draw of the top flight to highlight Portland's weekend at the SMC Invitational. Overall, nine total Pilots made the trek to play against some top regional competition at the Korth Tennis Complex.

Portland's Lucia Butkovska, ranked No. 75 in the ITA singles and the top seed of Flight A, was forced to retire in her first round match due to injury. Butkovksa and doubles teammate Jelena Lazarevic had already won two matches on Friday to reach doubles semifinals, but also had to pull out because of the injury.

"It was another long weekend for our team and another weekend full of ups and down," Portland head coach Susie Campbell said. "Lucia suffered an injury in her first round singles match and that put us in a tough spot as she was the favorite to win her flight. However, there were some positives as we saw improvement from last weekend.

"The two players that stood out were definitely Radina Dimitrova and Maja Mladenovic. Radina bounced back from a tough weekend and got to the finals of her flight by beating some quality opponents. She grinded out two three-set wins against a pair of tough, seasoned players and she showed us that she will be an impactful addition this year.

"Maja came back to win the consolation draw of the top flight after losing a tough first round match. In the process she beat Kimberly Yee from Stanford who is one of the top 10 recruits in the country. She showed once again that she is a fighter and that she plays her best tennis against the toughest competition. We also saw some improvements in doubles and are looking to continue that trend heading into the last tournament of the fall."

Portland will next take the court at the USTA/ITA Regionals in Palo Alto, Calif. on Oct. 23-27.
